Looking for Mentorship as a New LLP or Attorney? Start Learning Before You “Feel Ready”

There is a difference between understanding family law and knowing how to handle a hearing.

Today, we had the opportunity to train LLPs and attorneys on hearing strategy, courtroom preparation, and practical approaches that are not always taught in law school or traditional legal training. The reality is that many newer professionals walk into court with the rules and statutes memorized, but still feel unprepared when it comes to real-world application, judicial expectations, exhibits, witness flow, and presenting a case effectively.

Mentorship matters because experience matters.

For newer LLPs and attorneys, having access to professionals who have spent years in the courtroom can shorten the learning curve, build confidence, and help avoid costly mistakes for both the professional and the client. Sometimes the most valuable information comes from hearing what actually happens in practice — not just what is supposed to happen in theory.

One of the biggest things we discussed is that preparation is more than drafting pleadings. It is understanding:

  • Hearing strategy

  • Courtroom presentation

  • Judicial preferences

  • Witness preparation

  • Evidence organization

  • Negotiation leverage

  • Case themes

  • Professional credibility

The legal field can feel isolating when you are first starting out. Many LLPs and newer attorneys are trying to figure everything out on their own while balancing clients, deadlines, billing, and courtroom appearances. Finding mentorship, networking opportunities, and practical training can make a significant difference in both confidence and long-term success.

A huge thank you to Divorce Matters Managing Attorney, Justin Oliver, for sharing insight and practical experience during today’s training session. The collaboration and willingness to help newer professionals grow is exactly what strengthens the legal community.

We also appreciate everyone who attended, participated, and asked thoughtful questions during the Q&A session.

The legal profession grows stronger when experienced professionals are willing to teach, mentor, and help others develop practical courtroom skills — especially in family law, where the impact on families and children is significant.

If you are an LLP or newer attorney looking to grow your courtroom confidence, improve your strategy, and learn from practical experience, continue seeking out mentorship opportunities, trainings, and professional collaboration. Those connections matter.
